March 2016 Fighter of the Month

Becca Davis

2016-03-01

Name: Becca Davis

Age: 35

Hometown: San Antonio

Fighting for:

The strength to conquer my doubts, and showing my daughter that all strength comes from within.

How did you find CrossFit?

I had some major life changes occurring all at once. I knew it was in my best interest to find something constructive and challenging to take up my time. I researched boxes in my area, and found Fighter Up. As soon as I walked in the door, I knew it was the right fit for me.

How long have you been doing CrossFit?

I have been a Fighter for just about a year now.

What is your favorite WOD/Benchmark?

As of now, I don’t have a favorite. Grace was the first one to literally take my breath away.

What do you like the most about CrossFit?

Some days I have to force myself to show up, but each time I walk out the door it’s humbling. I have seen my strengths and weaknesses. Instead of comparing them to others I want to challenge myself more, instead of giving up.

What are your top three fitness goals?

I would love get hand stands and walking hand stands because I’m terrified of them, improve my snatch because it’s incredibly awkward, and my form is not so great, and get a muscle up because they’re just badass.

What was the best advice you were ever given?

“Believe in yourself as much as we do”, Coach Kyle

What advice would you give to someone starting a fitness journey?

Keep trying. Don’t ever give up. Push yourself beyond your comfort zone to see what you’re really capable of.

Where do you drawn your inspiration from?

My family and my fellow athletes. The love and support has always been unwavering.

Favorite professional athlete or superhero and why?

Mary Lou Retton was my idol when I was young. She was the first American, female Olympic gymnast to receive a gold medal. She packed so much power and beauty into one small package.

Favorite band or musician?

Coldplay, Calvin Harris, and Justin Bieber (yup, I’m a belieber).

What would be your ultimate fitness achievement?

To compete, and actually place in a CF competition.

What do you like the most about the Fighter Up CrossFit Family?

From the first day I walked in the door, I knew it wasn’t the typical ego-centered box. The coaches and the athletes have been beyond supportive and encouraging, even on my not-so-good days. They have become a second family to me. There is support when you’re up, and support when you’re down. We bring out the best in each other, and are genuinely happy to see each athlete succeed, and become better at what they do.  Coach Kyle and Cally go above and beyond their “job requirements”. They invest time and energy into each athlete to help them see beyond their limitations.

Fighter Up has changed my habits, my confidence, and my soul all for the better. I can’t wait to see where this road takes me.

Fighting for: To be healthy

How did you find CrossFit? Through a friend

How long have you been doing CrossFit? ~1 year

What do you like the most about CrossFit? Each day I go, I feel like I accomplished something.

What are your top fitness goals? To run a half marathon by the end of the year and continue to work towards conquering more CrossFit skills, maybe even a pull up.

What advice would you give to someone starting a fitness journey? The most important thing is to commit. It is easy to come up with excuses for why you can’t do something. The hard part is realizing how to push yourself to find a way so you eventually can.

Where do you draw your inspiration from? I am motivated more than inspired to continue my fitness journey after watching friends and loved ones suffer from obesity.

Favorite professional athlete and why? David Robinson. He was always more concerned with the success of the team vs. his own accomplishments.

Favorite band or musician? Tool, Nine Inch Nails, Cowboy Mouth, etc…

What would be your ultimate fitness achievement? At this point in my journey I have already accomplished more than I thought I ever could. Everything from here on out is just a bonus. I started my fitness journey about 2.5 years ago when I was over 100 pounds heavier, could barely run 200m and struggled with all forms of exercise. At this point, I would still like to reach my ideal weight but each day I focus on maintaining the lifestyle I have worked so hard to obtain.

What do you like the most about the Fighter Up CrossFit Family? I like the team atmosphere and that everyone helps support each other in their goals. Overall it is a very positive environment.

Help us recognize outstanding athletes in our box.

Could be you

2014-08-27

You don’t have to be the fastest or strongest athlete in our box to be recognized as an Athlete of the Month, you just have to have a fight inside of you that inspires those around you.  We all fight for something, but when that fight inspires fellow athletes, we want to pause and reflect not only on how hard you train, how far you’ve come, but also on how much it means to you.

If an athlete has impressed you, let one of our coaches know or email Cally at Cally@fighterupcrossfit.com.

Only start when you, and only you, are ready to fight to make the change for a healthier lifestyle. Be consistent, and do not expect immediate change. Haha.

Favorite professional athlete or superhero and why? Josh Bridges, because he’s a short bad ass!

Favorite band or musician? I don’t really have one. I listen to everything, but Walk the Moon’s cover of Burning Down the House is my PR song. Haha

Deanna Schaar

I’m Fighting for: Improving my health and fitness level.

How did you find Fighter Up CrossFit? My friend, Jennifer Oda, a CrossFit athlete, encouraged me to try it.

I’m doing things I never thought I could do because of them! Second, there’s an encouraging and supportive environment from all of the athletes.

What advice would you give to someone starting a fitness journey? That it is a journey…you never “arrive” but that’s what makes it fun and challenging. If you work hard, you reap the benefits. Believe it or not, you can get addicted!

Where do you draw your inspiration from? From my coaches and fellow athletes. There are amazing things happening in the box on a daily basis!

Favorite band or musician? Rascal Flatts

Ultimate fitness achievement? To be able to Rx every Metcon!

What do you like the most about the Fighter Up CrossFit Family? I’ve felt welcomed by everyone since my first day. Even though I’ve been working out for a long time, I was intimidated with what I thought CrossFit was. What’s great about it is that everything is scalable – you start where you are and improve from there. Your performance is always recorded so you and your coaches know how you are doing and where you are improving.

The coaches are truly amazing and focus on form and technique. In addition, they’re just good people (and put up with my complaining, whining, moaning, etc.!) I’d like to especially thank Coach Jonathan because he’s had to put up with me the most. Thank you, Coach, for always pushing me to do more than I ever thought I could do, supporting me, and believing in me!

Favorite professional athlete or superhero and why?  My favorite superhero is Professor Xavier from Xmen. What do you like the most about the Fighter Up CrossFit Family? I love the support and encouragement that seems to be in every member of the family. I love having knowledgeable coaches that not only care about you when you are in the gym but who care about your well-being in every facet of your life. September 2014

Alejandro "Alex" Aceves

2014-09-01

Name: Alejandro “Alex” Aceves

Age: 23 Hometown: Aguascalientes, Mexico

What I’m fighting for: I’m fighting to become the best me I know I can be. For years I struggled with my weight and health and I’m finally at a place where I’m doing good and I’m geared towards doing great!

How long have you been doing CrossFit? I have been doing CrossFit before for about 4 months; Sadly, I went on a very long hiatus…about 3 years later here I am getting back at it.

What do you like the most about CrossFit? I love the dynamics of the workouts. The fact that it’s not your typical gym workout is quite appealing.  Also, I feel like such a badass when doing CrossFit.

What are your top three fitness goals? Now that I am down to my desired weight, my three goals are: 1. Tone up (would be nice to have a six pack, other than the one in my fridge) 2. Bulk up (but not too much) 3. Get stronger (be able to do some of the more challenging feats and keep improving).

What was the best advice you were ever given? Definitely the best two pieces of advice I ever received were: 1. You can do it, keep it up (just the constant reminder that it may be tough but that I can do this) and; 2. focus on improving form and technique (which helps insure that as I increase weight, I won’t hurt myself).

Where do you draw your inspiration from? From myself (I see how far I have come and it pushes me to keep going forward), from my peers (I see the people around me trying their best too and I draw energy and motivation from them), and my instructors (they know what they’re doing, they ensure I too know what I’m doing and they push me hard to achieve my goals).

Favorite professional athlete or superhero and why? Mmm, does Sara Bareilles qualify as a superhero? I choose her because her music is a constant reminder to be myself, not give a f*** what anyone thinks of me other than myself, and to be brave, to raise my voice and be me (and this applies to all aspects of my life).

Favorite band or musician: Top 5 – Sara Bareilles, KT Tunstall, Kate Havnevik, Rachel Diggs, and Carla Bruni.

What would be your ultimate fitness achievement? To be able to run a marathon.

What do you like the most about the Fighter Up CrossFit Family? I love the atmosphere! To me that’s a very important thing. I like being in a place where I feel welcomed and comfortable… And the boxing! Boxing has been my favorite thing to do; I always look forward to the next boxing session! (Shout out to Brandon for being an amazing boxing coach and friend!).
